Ken Boyd

Small Businessman. Balancing Budgets.
Having worked for over 40 years in the financial services industry, Ken Boyd has balanced budgets for small and large businesses, families and government agencies. With his extensive background in banking and finance, Ken served on several financial standards organizations and as an organizing member of the operations committee of the MOST ATM network. This helped provide more convenient banking at thousands of ATM’s. Washington needs someone with thekind of experience balancing budgets and financial matters that Ken Boyd will take with him to Congress.

Working Through School
Ken Boyd went to college when his parents, yearning for a more rural lifestyle, moved to NC and he eventually became the first generation of his family to receive a college degree. Ken started his career in banking, working to put himself through school and in 1968, Ken was asked to start up a computer department for a bank in North Carolina.

Raising a Family
Fresh off a dove hunt and even though they worked in different departments for the same bank, Ken’s first date with Brenda was a blind-date set up by a friend in Martinsville, and he knew something
special was just beginning. Nearly 29 years later, Ken and Brenda have raised four children together; Casey, Patrick, Kelley, and Cory, and are the proud grandparents of Josh and Carson. Brenda works at the University of Virginia and together they are very active in the Charlottesville / Albemarle County community.

Martinsville & Charlottesville
After building a prosperous computer subsidiary for the bank he was lured by a larger bank in Martinsville VA (The First National Bank of Martinsville and Henry County) to develop a computer operation there in 1972. While living in Martinsville from 1972 to 1977 Ken taught computer science at the Patrick Henry Community College. He went on to a successful career in bank technology eventually ending up in Albemarle County where he was Executive Vice President and the senior operating officer for the computer subsidiary of Jefferson National Bank, the predecessor to what is now Wachovia Bank. Ken left corporate life in 1991 and formed his own small business, Boyd Financial Services that he still runs today.

Devotion to Community Service
Always active in his community Ken coached nearly every little league sport as his children were growing up including serving for several years as the commissioner of the YMCA high school basketball program. He volunteered for several years as the PTO president at both the middle and high school levels. He was an organizing member of the Albemarle County Parents Council and served as its Vice Chair. In 1995 inspired by Governor Allen’s initiative for Standards of Learning Ken cofounded the Virginians for Excellent in Education with Pat Earle to promote the importance of standards and accountability in public education. He also currently serves as a member of the Computers4Kids program in Charlottesville, VA.

In 1999 Ken entered his first election, running successfully for the school board, where he served until 2003. In 2003 he turned his attention to the Board of Supervisors and won again in a democrat leaning district. In 2007 he won reelection against another strong Democrat and is now serving his second term.
